Note that before you can insert a citation into a Word document, you must have the document and the desired EndNote library open on your computer. You can then insert the citation from the Word or EndNote interfaces.

- In the results of your search, click on the reference that you want to cite to highlight it. To highlight multiple references, hold down the Ctrl key while you click on references.
- Once you have selected your references, click on the Insert button. The selected references will be inserted into your Word document and displayed as defined by the current Output Style.
To insert a citation from within EndNote:
- In EndNote, highlight the references that you wish to cite. To highlight multiple references, hold down the Ctrl key while you click on references.
- Once you have selected your references, click on the Insert Citation button in the toolbar along the top. The selected references will be inserted into your Word document.
Note: Save your Word document after inserting citations.

Note: If you have to create an annotated bibliography, it's a good idea to remove field codes and then paste your annotations in the bibliography. Note: If you updated Word 2016 to the 64-bit version, be sure to update EndNote to version X7.6 for compatibility. If you have not updated EndNote and have the update for Word 2016, you will see the message 'Word was unable to load an add-in.' - EndNote X7: Close Word and go to EndNote.
EndNote online: Close word and install the tools using the installer, Drag the Cite While You Write folder to your applications folder then open that folder and run the CWYW_Installer file found here. If it's not working after proceed to the next set of instructions. - Click the EndNote menu and select 'Customizer.'
- Check the box in front of the 'Cite While You Write' option.
- Click next until the Customizer is finished. Open a library.
- Then open Word 2016 and check the Ribbon for the EndNote tab. (NOTE: The EndNote CWYW tools no longer appear under the Tools menu; rather appears as a separate tab in Word)
You should now see the EndNote tab in the Ribbon of Word 2016. If you are not seeing the EndNote tab, follow these steps:
- Close Word and EndNote.
- Open your hard drive and go to the following folder:

Copy the file 'EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle' by highlighting the file and going to 'Edit > Copy.'
NOTE: If you do not see the 'EndNote CWYW Word 2016.bundle' file in the 'Applications: EndNote X7: Cite While You Write' folder (or if this file is not the most up to date version), you can follow these steps:- Download a copy of the latest EndNote online tools here.
- Run this file and follow the steps to install the tools in Word.
- Skip step 3.
- Go to the folder '[Hard Drive Name] : Library : Application Support : Microsoft : Office365 : User Content : Startup : Word' and paste the file, 'Edit > Paste.'
Note: If you have trouble finding the above location you need to click on Finder (in the Dock the icon of a face) to the right of Finder click on the Go menu then click on Computer then click on the Macintosh Hard Drive. You should then be able to follow the path above.
Note: In non-English versions of Word, the folder named 'Startup' may be called 'Start' or be in the localized language of Word. - Start Word, go to 'Word > Preferences' and click on 'File Locations.'
- If the Startup folder is set to any location, highlight 'Startup' and click on 'Reset.'
- Click 'OK' and Quit Word.
- Start EndNote and then start Word.
